Flood Warning: Lillooet River (Upgraded)
ISSUED: November 9 2016 9:00 AM
The BC River Forecast Centre is upgrading to a Flood Warning for:

  • Lillooet River near Pemberton, and surrounding creeks and tributaries

Overnight heavy rainfall from 60 - 75 mm over Howe Sound and the Squamish river watershed and 20 - 85 mm over the Lillooet watershed, and snow melt due to warm temperatures, have caused rapid rises in these two rivers. The current and forecast flow conditions include:

  • Lillooet River near Pemberton (08MG005) is flowing at 1206 m3/s, which is a 20-50 year return period flow, and is forecast to rise to 1434 m3/s today, a 50-100 year return period flow. Water Survey of Canada has reported a problem with the gauge, which is likely under estimating flows, and is sending a technician to the site. The above flow estimates take into consideration the under estimated flows.

Environment and Climate Change Canada forecast about 10 mm rainfall for today over these regions and river levels are expected to rise slightly and be stable this evening. A break in the rain is forecast overnight tonight into Thursday which should allow the rivers to stablize and then recede.

The public is cautioned to stay clear of rivers during rain events due to quickly flowing water and potentially unstable riverbanks.

The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and will provide an update on Wednesday.

High Streamflow Advisory: Lillooet River

The BC River Forecast Centre is issuing a High Streamflow Advisory for:

Heavy rainfall in the headwaters of the Lillooet River basin earlier Tuesday have resulted in rapid streamflow increases on the river this afternoon. Overnight forecast rainfall totals for lower elevations in the basin are in the 20 to 30 mm range, and higher totals are likely in the headwaters.

The river has been rising at 5 to 8 cm/hr this afternoon. Current flows are approximately 420 m3/s. Forecast flows are expected to be close to 700 m3/s overnight and are forecast to peak from 760 to 780 m3/s (5-year return period flows), although flows may be pushed higher due to additional snowmelt runoff. Peak flows are forecast for Wednesday afternoon.
The public is cautioned to stay clear of rivers during rain events due to quickly flowing water and potentially unstable riverbanks.

The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and will provide an update on Wednesday.
