In It Together: Why Wildfire Preparedness Starts at Home

Posted on May 05, 2025

As wildfire season approaches, the theme of this year’s National Emergency Preparedness Week “In It Together” reminds us that protecting our community is a shared responsibility.

While emergency services are on the front lines, every household plays a role in wildfire prevention. One of the most effective ways to contribute is by preparing your home and property before the season begins.

Here are a few simple steps that can make a big difference:

  • Clear leaves and needles from your roof and gutters

  • Trim back branches and keep grass cut short

  • Move flammable items (like firewood or propane tanks) at least 10 metres away from structures

  • Choose fire-resistant plants and landscaping materials where possible

These actions don’t just protect your home, they help protect your neighbours and give firefighters a safer environment to work in.
