Emergency Preparedness Week has come to a close, and we want to thank everyone in the community who joined us, whether online or in person, to learn more about how we can all work together to stay safe this wildfire season.
This year’s theme, “In It Together,” highlights the fact that emergency preparedness isn’t just about individual households; it’s about shared responsibility. When residents take small, proactive steps, they help protect not just their own property but their neighbours, emergency responders, and the broader community.
Over the past week, we focused on a few key areas:
Wildfire Preparedness at Home
We encouraged residents to take small actions that make a big difference, like clearing dry debris from roofs and gutters, moving firewood and propane away from buildings, and trimming lower tree branches to reduce fire spread. Learn more about FireSmart Tips here.
Vehicle and Grab-and-Go Bag Readiness
In the event of an evacuation, being able to leave quickly and safely is critical. We shared tips for keeping your vehicle fueled and ready, and outlined the essentials to pack in a grab-and-go bag; including supplies for pets. Learn what to pack here.
Understanding Evacuation Stages
We also explained the difference between an evacuation alert (be ready) and an evacuation order (leave immediately), and encouraged everyone to have an emergency plan in place before wildfire season peaks.
Honouring Our Emergency Personnel
We took time to recognize the work of our local firefighters, paramedics, RCMP, BC Wildfire teams, and volunteers. Their dedication is vital, but their work is made safer and more effective when residents are prepared.
Community Engagement
A highlight of the week was our Wildfire & Emergency Preparedness Day event at the Downtown Community Barn. Thank you to everyone who attended, connected with our emergency teams, and participated in activities. It was a great example of how preparedness and community go hand in hand.
What’s Next?
Although the week is over, we encourage you to keep the momentum going. Talk to your family about your emergency plan, check your home for fire risks, and keep learning.
