This year, Pemberton Fire Rescue is working in coordination with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to raise awareness about the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and ways to minimize them. These small but powerful batteries are found in many items we use daily, from phones and laptops to power tools, e-bikes and children’s toys.
While lithium ion batteries are efficient and reliable, they can pose a fire risk if damaged, used incorrectly or charged improperly. Fires involving these batteries have increased as their use has grown.
How to Stay Safe
- Buy smart
Only purchase and use devices, batteries and charging equipment that are certified by a recognized testing lab. If you need replacements, buy directly from the manufacturer or a verified source. - Charge safely
Use the charger that came with your device and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Always charge on a hard surface, not on a bed or couch, and unplug devices once they’re fully charged. - Recycle responsibly
Don’t throw lithium ion batteries in the garbage. Take them to a proper recycling location instead. Find one near you at www.recycleyourbatteries.ca.
Know the Warning Signs
Stop using a device or battery immediately if you notice:
- An unusual odour or noise
- Excess heat
- Swelling or leaking
- Discolouration
Join Us for Fire Prevention Week
To help residents learn more about battery safety, Pemberton Fire Rescue is hosting an Open House on Saturday, October 11, from 10 am to 2 pm at the Firehall (1350 Aster Street). Drop by to explore safety tips, fire truck tours, see live demonstrations and talk with firefighters about how to keep your home and family safe.
Together, we can charge into fire safety and help prevent fires before they start.
