NEW CENTRE PROJECT BACKGROUND
The 1950’s-built high school on Pemberton Meadows Road became a temporary community centre after having been decommissioned as a high school in 1995. Prior to this, the Village and surrounding areas were without a community space; the original Community Centre, located where AG Foods is today, having burned down in December 1980.
Since 1998, the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has leased the Meadows Road building and property from the School Board for $1/year. Since August 1999 and until recently, recreation services were provided under contract by the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the contract overseen by the SLRD's PVUC Committee .
NEW CENTRE - THE PROJECT
The vision for this project began with a desire to provide the community with a facility capable of hosting state-of-the-art mutimedia presentations, recreational programming and meeting the need for community events. With partial funding from the Canada/BC Infrastructure Grant Program, the SLRD and VoP began the process of creating a central gathering place and lasting legacy within our community.

Consultation with the public, local user groups, recreation and library staff as well as elected officials resulted in a clear understanding of the need for a multi-use facility, housing both the Pemberton & District Public Library and a Community Centre/Fitness Centre. In March of 2006 basic building shape was established and pre-load was placed. Design and engineering began.
The community of Pemberton identified that green inititaives were high on the priority list for the new facility. Geothermal heating and cooling was utilized to ensure that the facility will remain environmentally responsible for years to come. The building has been outfitted with an innovative new type of energy recovery system called Variable Flow Heating and Cooling. This feature has the potential to deliver maximum energy savings, while providing extremely high primary energy ratios and low operating costs.
The Great Hall has large windows on the east side, similar to garage doors, that retract to allow for an open archway onto a large patio area that will step down onto a fully landscaped outdoor amphittheater (not yet completed). Specific thought has been put into the design and location of the building to ensure the facility has optimum natural light and to fully capitalize on the spectacular views of the area.
The facility itself has been equipped with low flow faucets, shower heads and dual flush toilets to save on water consumption. Interior finishing materials have been selected from environmentally conscious suppliers. For example, the interior linoleum flooring is constructed from all natural products, with natural anti-bacterial properties that prevent micro-organisms from muliplying. Low VOC (Volitile Organic Compound) paint has been chosen to ensure good air quality today and in years to come. Low-E windows have been installed to minimize the effects of direct sunlight in winter months and the facility has been oriented to a certain direction to optimize the direction of wind in ventilating the buidling. The Atrium windows have been designed to open and close, increasing natural air flow and allowing more natural light into the facility.
It is the intention to create a facility that will become a lasting legacy for our community while remaining environmentally aware and utilizing green technology whenever possible.
